A Fun Whistle

 This is a fun whistle! I bought it awhile ago on my way out of a music store. It’s a Clarke’s Meg in C; it cost five dollars, blows well through the octaves, is reasonably tuned and played heartily everyday. Fun!

I envy you, LOL!
I want two of them, one in D and one in C but I can’t get them here in Argentina. I’m trying to save money to place a bigger order in which they are both included.

Enjoy it!

Martin

Huh. I’m surprised the C Meg is decent. The SweeTone C is … not great.

That was the first whistle i bought. Simply because it wasn’t possible to buy any other in town.

I gave it to a friend and bought a black D + a blue C.

Those two are my practice and bring along whistles and will continue to be the last when i get my next whistle(s).

I can recommend giving them to people who are interested in whistles, though they can be a bit difficult to keep in the high a and b (on the D, g and a on the C) for a beginner. Besides that, they’re easy to play.

I own a sweetone natural, and won’t ever give it away.

It is perfectly in tune, it has nice breathy sound, it is easy to play and not shrill in 2nd octave.

Well, it is not my main whistle. But it is a great one, and I see no reason for a beginner to start from any other whistle.

Congratulations, Oregonden, enjoy!!
I had a Meg in D and played it on and on until the mouthpiece cracked for some reason. I still remember when I first received it. My wife and daughter were going shopping for the afternoon and I was just settling down in my basement “practice room” to play. My wife walked in from the mailbox with a big smile and a cardboard box. They went shopping, and I played happily for the rest of the afternoon.

What’s your story Oregon? Did you just start playing?

Hello Mutepointe,

Thanks for asking. Yes, only been tootlin’ for two months. I’m semi-retired, have been playing stringed instruments for nearly fifty years and trying to have fun  . I lost my wife and best friend of thirty-four years to cancer two years ago and the void has been vast.

I’ve made several flutes and whistles from PVC during the last few months (Thanks, Guido!). The low D came out nice. Fun! I have a couple of Jerry’s whistles, too. More fun! And…C&F has been a light when I needed it. Let’s tack to windward!

Dennis

ya i havent found the one I have to be that great, but i’m glad you like yours have fun playing!

Welcome to the board oregonden. The Meg in D was my first whistle. It cost $3.00 and $6.00 to ship. I still play it and keep it in my patrol car duty bag so I can play all night on slow work nights.

Sweetones are pretty good whistles.

Dennis
My condolences regarding the loss of your wife. I’m sure she can hear you practicing in heaven!

I have a MEG and a Sweetone both in D. They sound and play pretty much the same. I don’t like the ridge on the back of them, and the holes are kind of small. The MEG doesn’t dent easily like the Sweetone.
That being said, the MEG is the best musical instrument deal in history. It is not a toy. You can play anything on it, and all for under $4. If you don’t think it sounds good, go to youtube, I think it is called tradschool and it is French. There is a guy there who plays a MEG C really well.

Go to clarketinwhistle.com, as long as you order over 7.50 British pounds worth of whistles they send worldwide for free. I think you can get 3 MEGs for that price. There is a whistle maker named Marcel Muttis from Argentina who posts here. His website is marcelomuttis.com.ar, also look at escuelacelta.com.ar
I have family that I have never met in Martinez, Argentina. Some day I hope to visit them.

MAC

Thanks for the info, MAC, I didn’t know that. I already have many whistles, but I’d like to have a MEG. Unfortunately, I don’t have credit card, so, I don’t know it would be possible to order it through the official webpage.

Martin

You can ask a friend or relative to order it for you. I don’t have a credit card either and that’s how I’ve ordered things online before.

I don’t know a person who has credit card. In Argentina is not common anymore.
I’ve bought successfully from internet always using “MoneyGram” (it’s like Western Union, but cheaper).
I’ve already written to Clarke’s Company to see if they can accept it. Otherwise, I’ll keep saving money to place a bigger order from WhistleAndDrum (they told me that they can accept MoneyGram, and I want to buy other whistles as well as those MEGs).

Thanks,
Martin

Dear Dennis:

Sorry about your wife. I’ve seen too much cancer in my lifetime too.

Stick around this forum. Besides learning things, there are some nice folks here. When I first started playing the whistle and then flute, many things on this forum went completely over my head. Now that I have some knowledge and experience, I learn even more.

I’ve been curious about the Megs for a while now. My Sweetone C is among my favorite whistles, and I’ve always wondered what the differences are between the Sweetone and the Meg. Is the fipple the same? Do they play/sound similar?

Can anyone fill me in?

So they play/sound almost the same, but the MEG is better, it’s cheaper and it doesn’t dent like the sweetone.

I think I’ll have to order a Meg. I have a green Sweetone C now which I really like, so I think I’ll go for a Meg D.
