A few memories.

I’d like to share with you a picture of my grandmother,
taken earlier this year, before she passed away.

This next picture is of the historic Ft. Gibson site, which
is not far from here. It served as a military base during
what is called the American Civil War.

This next picture was taken recently by my father, on
his travels, and is the site of the Oklahoma Land Runs.

I can’t quite make out what it says on the two signs. Any chance you could post the text?

This should be easier to read:

The Land Runs are where the University of Oklahoma gets
its nickname Sooners. A Sooner was someone who cheated
on the Land Run by staking a claim ahead of time. There was a
movie about the Land Run… I think it was Far And Away.

What a lovely lady your Grandmother was, Walden. She looks happy among the flowers.

I had forgotten all about those land run things. I remember seeing some drawings of them in our textbook in school. I can’t remember why they did them though, instead of just having people sign up for a piece of land in an office.

Your grandmother does look very lovely among the rhododendrons (I think they are).

Thank you for sharing your memories Walden, I’m especially happy to see the two plaques commerating the land rushes. I don’t know which one it was that my great grandfather particapted in but it was one of them.

That was the 2005 Azalea Festival at Honor Heights in Muskogee.

I’m not sure why they went about it in that manner, either, but it
was part of a postwar effort to populate uninhabited Cherokee
lands with Anglo-American settlers.
