This morning I got 2 tunable Dixons from Steve Power: 1 in C and 1 in E. As I had never seen a Dixon whistle before, this was a cure for my prejudices about plastic whistles (plastic = shabby look and shrill sound).
The Dixon whistles look and feel really nice, well made, not cheap, almost elegant, the sound is mellow and a bit chiffy. The E whistle has some intonation problems, but maybe I just need more time to adapt my playing to it.
I know it has been said a million times before, but let this newly converted fan repeat it: Dixon whistles are a great value for a little price.
I just got a Dixon Tuneable A from Steve today too - hasn’t he been busy! As my plastic has been playing up, he hasn’t even had my wonga yet, but as I wanted the whistle before my hols next week, he sent it anyway, plus a C Meg for free! Wotta Star!
Just had a quick toot on the A, as expected it sounds great, feels great, and the holes aren’t so big your fingers get lost in them, as I find on the Generation Bb. Giving it the full test drive at lunchtime.
I’ve got four different Dixons, a high D tuneable, High D Brass Slide, Low D Duo, and now the A, and I love them all!
Update: Played the Dixon A on the stairs at lunchtime, and all I can say is: GORGEOUS. The OXX OOO sounded out, but when I checked it in a scale rather than a tune, I realised it was my usual whistles that were more out - nothing I can’t blow into tune. Finally played “Mimi and the New Generation Polkas” on the same key whistle Eoin did, and I earnt 20p from a passerby! This one is definitely going with me on my 3 day walk next week, I can picture myself walking along the Dorset cliffs while playing, and scaring the cows! Marvellous!

Whistle is My Weapon of Choice

Ya’ll must have some high-strung cattle over there. Mine(angus/charlois beef cows) don’t even raise their head over a whistle. Now it does take them a few days to get over the GHP, (they will usually stop grazing and just stare for about 15 minutes,a nosey one will come closer sometimes but after a few days this bunch will get use to it. But, if we rotate cattle in the field around the house the new ones will react the same.
And I agree, I’ve got a Low D, Bb and A Dixon- love them all.
