A Christmas Carol Cheat Sheet.

Last year I put together a “cheat” sheet to help me learn and memorize some common Christmas Carols. I found that if I was reminded what key and what first couple of notes, then I could muddle through the rest. So this sheet has the name, the key, and the first couple of measures of each carol. I know its a bit early for the holiday season, but if your like me it takes a while to get comfortable with tunes and carolling season actually starts a couple of weeks before the Holiday.

Also, if you are teaching some young 5th or 6th grader to play by ear (W.Badger?), this might be a quick list of tunes they can pick up quick. Nothin’ teachs like success.

[I don’t know why this board insists on putting a big chunk of blank space between this text and the table, If anyone has an answer, please drop me an email and I’ll fix it. thx.
P.S. My test print ombined with the big space resulted in the table comming out all on one page.]

Lee,

That’s great. I guess a number of us could have put this together, but you did and were thoughtful to share it with us.

Thanks

Bob

Thanks! This is my first whistle-enabled Christmas and your chart was very helpful.

I would love to hear some of these songs on Clips & Snips…

Hi,

It’s because the PHP based board software uses a function (nl2br) to retain the new-lines and blank line formatting of the posts that HTML would normally supress. This leads to HTML ‘BR’ tags being inserted in strange places in your HTML table code. The only way I can think to fix it would be by running all your table code into a single line.

Hope this helps,

Keith

Here’s some international tunes-
starting notes only- on D whistle unless otherwise noted- I just take them all and figure out which one plays with each song-
q=quarter note
h=half note
e=eighth note

Personet Hodie(On This Day, it’s in the 1982 Episcopal Hymnal, pg 92
E(q),E(q), B(h), A(q)A(q)B(h)

Taladh Chriosta (The Christ Child’s Lullaby)
Bflat whistle
D(q),E(.h),Fsharp(q),Aflat(h),A(q),B(h),Aflat(q)E(h)

The Holly and the Ivy
G(q), G(e),G(e),G(q),high E(q)D(Q),B(.q)

Whence Comes This Rush of Wings( the Carol of the Birds)
Bflat whistle
B(q),A(e),B(e),Csharp(q),C sharp(q),D(q),D(q),C sharp(h)

Glouchestershire Wassail
D(q),G(h),G(q),G(q)A(q)B(q),C(q),B(q),A(q),B(q),D(q),D(q)

The Boar’s Head Carol
A(q), D(h),D(.q),D(e),C sharp(q),D(q),A(.q)

There’s the start of a few with international flavor, anything in particular that you want? I play piano/organ and have a pretty good selection of Christmas music, so I might have the tune.

Thanks, Lee. I’ll be caroling in
hospitals and this will come in
handy.
