A bit of fun from Auntie Beeb

A BBC experiment in musical ability/perception etc. You may enjoy it:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/labuk/experiments/musicality/

I did middling-to-disappointing by being ‘better than 69% of the population’. Probably that 69% that like the X factor. Damn.

I scored pretty well.
Enthusiasm for music 96%
Musical perception 99%
Emotional connection 70% (I don’t understand how I’m low here)
Social creativity 86%
Musical curiosity 84%

I did terribly in the first test with the 1 second clips:
pop jazz rock pop
rock hip-hop rock rock
hip-hop pop hip-hop pop
hip-hop jazz jazz jazz
Apparently, I don’t know my pop from a hip-hop.

I was 13/18 on match the beat
I had 4 high, 4 medium, and 1 low on tap to the beat (I’m think computer lag has to play a part in that)
I was 12/12 in melody memory

I guess the overall result is good but I’m surprised by the couple of things I commented on.

OK I will add my scores. Easy to beat…
Enthusiasm for music 70%
Musical perception 69%
Emotional connection 70%
Social creativity 5%
Musical curiosity 5%

Me too. Yeuky test. Skipped that. I could not stand the noises I was making.

14/18 for match the beat
3 high 6 medium for tap-to-the-beat. It takes me a while to ‘sync’, and I was tempted to tap the rhythm, not the beat.
7/12 melody memory. No surprise there. Takes me a while to learn a tune.

One of those clips sounded like classical to me, but with no other classical clips, I was really lost. The only ones I felt very sure of were the 3 I pegged as jazz, the rest just didn’t sit solidly for me. I think I probably don’t draw enough distinction between rock, pop, and hip-hop …and my exposure to the last one is very limited.

Well this was fun…my results are:
Enthusiasm for music 92%
Musical perception 99%
Emotional connection 64%
Social creativity 70%
Musical curiosity 90%

I too did terribly in the first test with the 1 second clips:
hip-hop hip-hop jazz jazz
rock hip-hop rock rock
pop hip-hop pop pop
pop jazz jazz rock
Oh well, there was no ITM here, so I am not surprised

I was 14/18 on match the beat
I had 6 high and 3 medium on tap to the beat
I was 10/12 in melody memory

I think it is time to be a bit more socially creative

I took this test some while ago. Not sure when, but I think it was when the Beeb first put it out - late last year? early this year? something like that, in any case.

I got some weird scores, I can tell you:

Enthusiasm 70%
Musical perception 99%
Emotional connection 28% (not a typo!)
Social creativity 98%
Musical curiosity 94%

My other bits weren’t too bad, I thought:

hip-hop pop pop pop
rock hip-hop jazz jazz
rock hip-hop rock rock
hip-hop pop jazz jazz

match the beat: 14/18
tap to the beat: 6H, 2M, 1L
melody memory: 12/12

I think the thing that pleased me most in that lot was that my melody memory was 100%. Bloody well should be too!

I think the thing that surprises me most is that I am almost as good as you at the beat stuff :boggle: . I am poor at spotting small differences between melodies though. Perhaps that explains why I think that jigs and reels all sound the same  .

But then, if you take my scores for ‘emotional connection’ and ‘enthusiasm’ together, you’d have to come to the conclusion that music doesn’t affect me one jot and I don’t care. Hmmm …

mrs. mutepointe and I took the quiz as a team. We like to further science. Thanks for the link.

So the test is very accurate… :smiling_imp:

I bet he wouldn’t say things like that if he weren’t armed with a big flute.
