A Beautiful Car

My brother got married at the weekend, this is the car that took him to the wedding:

It was an amazingly lovely car. Gorgeous. We got to ride through the town as we went to get some photos taken at the harbour before it took us to the ceremony itself. Lots of people stood and stared. I’d like to think they were staring at the handsome devils in the back of the car but I think (and I would if it was me) they were probably just admiring the beautiful blue machine we were riding in.

That’s a humdinger. I’ll bet it’s a good race car. That is, everytime you drive it’s a race to see if the speed hits 50 or the gas needle hits empty.

Well it didn’t have far to go from where we live but the guy did fill it right to the brim before coming down. But that was more because he didn’t know if he’d get any petrol later on due to some industrial action at an oil refinery in Scotland just now. Lots of panic buying and empty petrol pumps up here this week.

It does my head in just thinking of driving on the left, let alone trying to do it in a car set up for right-lane driving. :astonished:

Pfft. Here you see it all the time. The law books really ought to bow to reality and call it the “slow lane”.

The guy who owns/drives it said it takes a lot of concentration, especially due to it’s size.

What amazed me was how modern the car was. All windows fully electric, power steering and it even had a light sensor to automatically dip the headlights. All in a car from the early 1950s.

Apparently it’s a special edition made to mark the 50th anniversary of cadillac and there were only 530 odd made. It’s the only one like it in the UK.

We had a 52 and a 54 when I was a kid, but not convertible. On the 54, you put gas in under the rear right tailight (I think it was the right side). I used to push the button to make it go up just for the heck of it. I still have the scar when my finger got caught in the door as my Mom closed it…

You’re going to have to explain this, 'cause I feel like I’m missing something obvious here. Like some car enthusiast in-joke or something.

Found some info on the car though:

It’s funny to realize that Cadillac, that most American of icons, has impeccable Quebecois roots.

Read the wikipedia link in my last post. After arriving in New France, Tony Lamott awarded himself a knighthood and title he had no right to.

That page hurts my brain. I’m guessing it’s been translated from French by someone who doesn’t speak english very well.

Or maybe Babelfish. Spend any time in Quebec, and you’ll become inured. When I read it, I can even hear the accent…
