Today is the 60th anniversary of the final German offensive in the West during WWII. If anyone cares there’s a lot of stuff online about it.
Though small by East Front standards, the one month battle ultimately involved a over a million troops from Germany, the US and Britain.
Special distinction goes to the 106th Infantry division, the 28th “Bloody Bucket” Inf. Div and the 101st “Screaming Eagles” Abn Div. for their roles in holding back the tide.
It’s being commemorated in a big way here in Belgium, even more than the 50th anniversary, with lots of TV coverage too.
Survivors of “Easy Company” featured in the Stephen Ambrose book and Spielberg/Hanks TV series “Band of Brothers” are travelling for the event, and will meet German survivors over the next couple of days.
Wow. I wish I could be there. I would love to see that area and soak in the terrain features.
I’ve spent a lot of time on US Civil War battlefields but never the ones in Europe. Europes has so many more to choose from I could spend years in France and the low countries alone.
