Is anyone out there playing a set with only one regulator? I’ve been playing a half set now for a few years and was considering trying regs but can’t afford upgrading to a 3/4 set right now. Any thoughts? Anyone know of any videos of a one reg setup?

I moved to regulators gradually, starting with a baritone reg, then adding the tenor 9 months later.

When you’re beginning on the regulators, you want to keep it simple. Even if you have 2 or 3 regulators, often teachers will recommend that you turn the tenor and bass away so that you are only playing on the baritone. This is so that you won’t be distracted while learning timing and coordination with your reg hand. I might be mistaken but I think this was the approach used on the Art of Uilleann Piping vol 3.

I have all three on my C# set. I actually like the sound of just the bass . If I had to choose just one, that’s the one I would have.

Ronan Browne plays a lovely James Kenna set with one regulator (tenor):

Many of the older sets had just one regulator.

If you were upgrading from a half set the usual first regulator is the baritone. I’d say the baritone is the most used and most useful.
