4 Keys Sam Murray flute for sale

Hello everybody. I’ve just discovered this forum and it looks great!! Fairplay!
I’m going to put my Sam Murray flute for sale on ebay next week. It’s a 2 years old blackwood D flute in mint condition. The 4 keys are (G#, C, Bb, long F). It has no cracks and it has just been serviced by Sam last week. It’s a powerful flute (a real beast!) and it has a great tone. I’m selling it because I’m waiting on an 8-key flute and, regretfully, I can’t afford to have both :sniffle: !!
If anyone wants to buy it straight away before I put it on ebay please get in touch - it’ll save me all the ebay hassle and it’ll save you a year waiting. I’m not much of a photographer but here you have some pics anyway. (I’ll try to take some better ones if anyone needs)

I’m looking for 1,700 euros and I accept Paypal.
Cheers
All the best

1700 euros for a four key Sam Murray flute? Are the keys that expensive? Making the flute double the price of a Murray keyless? :boggle:

1700 euro seems like a great price to me. This won’t last long.

Sure, keys are expensive, and silver cost is up, and extra work for turning the block mounts. Hammy Hamilton’s price list, for instance, has a keyless for 850 Euros, a 4-key for 2200 Euros, a 6-key for 2875 Euros.

Does Sam M make prattens? I’ve heard only of
rudall-style flutes so far.

The seller says this
flute is ‘a real beast.’

You should perhaps attempt to make a keyed flute sometime, only then, I think, will you appreciate the value.

Just about any flute is a beast in the right hands!!!

i’m going to have a new boxwood 6 key for 1725 Euro.

I reckon you have a keyless Wilkes, Steampacket, how much do you think you 'd have to pay for a Wilkes 4-key?

If it’s a Murray, Claudine, it’s a good bargain indeed :stuck_out_tongue:

I find 1700 euros a really fair price for Murray 4-key.

it is a Murray, yes. It wouldn’t make sense to compare pears and apples, would it?

Hmm - I really didn’t realise that keys were that expensive. I have a keyless Murray incoming for 840 euros. Fair enough then, 1700 euros + no waiting time - a fair price for someone who needs keys on their flute

Nice price for a Murray. How long the wait?

I placed the order in august 2007. So if I really get it in 3 weeks, that would be 11 months.

Hi Claudine,
how did you contact Sam Murray then. Via phone, email, by mail or in person?

Cheers, Moritz

i wrote him an email. later i called him on the phone sometimes.
He had posted his contact details last year:

He’s quick to respond. I got a keyless @ €775 in three months last year

that’s really quick. but maybe you have an advantage as you are living quite close to him and could probably ask him in person, instead of being a faceless customer who can only place an order by phone or email.

No, I don’t think so, a keyless is quick and easy, the bread and butter of all flutemakers. Several people I have spoken to since got them even quicker after I got mine. I did collect it in person once it was done.

Hi Jim,

About 8 months ago I contacted Emer Mayock regarding what type of flute she was playing on a certain tune (I don’t remember which one at the moment but I think it was on her “Playground” album) I liked the power and the “Honk” she was getting out of the flute she was playing. She wrote me back and indicated that she was playing a Sam Murray. So at that point I contacted Sam regarding his different models. He indicated that he doesn’t make a Pratten flute, only a Rudall style.

The tag of a “Beast” may be accurate in the right hands.

All the best,
-Clay
