3D Barringer Meteorite Crater

There’s a hole
There’s a hole …

Looking at the photo of Meteor Crater, Arizona brings back old memories of my geologic studies. Mr. Barringer gave me permission to do a scientific study at the crater in the summer of 1968. Carrying a heavy pack, I climbed in and out of the crater more times than I want to think about right now. I was using newly developed geophysical instruments to see if we could detect the presence of a large meteor mass beneath the floor of the crater. I couldn’t find any anomaly on my instruments, so my conclusion was that the mass of the meteorite had mostly vaporized on impact with the ground.

So what does 300K tons of nickel-iron smell like, anyways? :boggle:

Yes, now that you mention it, there was a strange smell in the crater. I just assumed that it was from the accumulated rodent droppings.

When I worked at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, two of the Astronomers were on permanent Meteorite watch - they were liable to be called out at any time to investigate a possible meteorite strike. They were hoping to retreive lumps of meteorite. They never found one (at least, not up until the time I left).

I’m kind of disappointed that they’ve already done the cross-eyed anaglyph. On the other hand, it’s nice to see it in colour.

Aha! Just as I suspected … Freegan spoor! :boggle:
