Does anyone know if there is going to be a 2006 Florida Tional at the School of Massage in Gainesville? I went last year and really enjoyed it.

Sorry, but I have to show my ignorance. What in the world is a “tional”? I tried to look it up on google, and all it returned was the last part of international.

IMU, it’s traditionally a “piper’s gathering”, but has come into wider use as a term for an Irish music gathering that includes workshops, classes, sessions, etc. From there, some Tionols have since gone on to include Irish art, dancing, storytelling, knitting, & what have you. The Mississippi River Celtic Music Festival in St. Louis is also known as “Tionol.”
Last year it was in the last week of janruary or somewhere around there. I hope there is one this year, i want to take some flute classes.

It is called a tionól because it is a pipers’ gathering first and foremost. All other instruments are secondary, though welcome, additions to the main piping event.

Just thought i would bump this thread up and see if anyone knew anything about a 2006 Florida Tional. Last year it was in Gainesville at the School of Massage, perhaps i should call them to see.

You could PM Joseph E Smith, one of the moderators of this forum. I believe he was involved with the Florida Tionól. If I remember correctly, there won’t be one in Gainesville this winter, but there will be a gathering in Georgia somewhere. Best to contact JES, as I may have this messed up.

Yes, just PM Joseph. He’ll know.
The Florida Tionol is becoming the South East Tionol and is going to rotate between locations in the south east U.S. That way we give the folks in FL a break and they don’t have to do all the work every year.
This year will be in Atlanta (well actually Marietta/Roswell) and will be held March 24-26.
We are finalizing negotiations with a flute instructor and will be posting an update in the next week or so, as well as beginning registration in mid- to late December.

Cool. Keep us updated on the flute instructor. I would drive up from Tallahassee to study with a flute teacher.
