100 things to do wrong starting the whistle.

The other thread where shatfield listened to and took our advice prompts this thread. My big first mistake:

  1. I didn’t find the forums so I had to glean all my advice about whistles from sellers and makers. I had no one to ask in person and had only seen one person play a whistle.
  1. Play it just like a recorder
  1. assume that because there are only six holes it’s little more than a toy.

Great thread Mute…can’t wait to hear the replies.

I hope I haven’t done this but…

  1. Buy a whistle because of the way it sounded either on a recording or processed with echoe or because of who played it.

I’d much rather hear them all sound raw because that’s what it’s going to sound like in my bedroom.

  1. Give up because it squeaks.

5.1. Thinking that it’s the whistle’s fault, and not yours.

  1. Get WhOA instead of a practice ethic.
  1. Tongue every note.

  2. Pay little attention to the peculiarities of Irish timing.

  1. never tongue any notes

  2. never listen to other player’s play

  1. play it in the car while driving
  1. Take yourself/your music too seriously
  1. Don’t take practice seriously enough
  1. Fail to buy the best hand-tuned whistle you can afford.

  2. Play in front of others and expect them to be impressed.

  1. Never Play in front of others because you think they might not be impressed (you never know!!!)

  2. Never listen to/or play along with recordings on the internet.

  1. Think that learning to read/decipher sheet music is a waste of time because I have learn tunes by ear alone like the “traditional players” do it.
  1. Blame the whistle for fluffs and tuning wobbles

  2. Being too thin-skinned to accept a little blunt but well-intentioned advice

  1. (or 20 if I overlook the repeated numbers)
Getting overwhelmed by all the possible resources and trying to learn everything from everywhere at once.

I’ve only been playing for about 9 months so this one applies to me. :astonished:
23. Assuming tha a more expensive whistle will be a better whistle.

Taking it too serious.

You can be serious - but when you stop having fun, you’re too serious.

Putting your favorite whistle in your rear pocket and sitting down. :astonished:
