Re: Trees

It all sounds perfectly lovely! This time of year is always good. If we get it at all, this is the time we get the nicest weather of the year, loads of flowers, the cuckoo calling. Raises great hope for the summer to come and a break from the regular bleakness. The mood usually lasts only a few wee...

Re: Trees

The greening is slow this year; it's been an unseasonably cold, wet April with only widely-spaced one-day teases of how nice it could be. Even the grass is hesitant, but then we're trying to bounce back from last year's drought which was a killer. So, if it means cold has to go with it, I'll take t...

Re: Trees

The magnolia tree at my complex is blooming; I look forward to this every year because I love magnolias. We're about to have thunderstorms, though, which is going to completely destroy all the flowers, so I'm glad I got to have a good look at it in all its glory today.

Re: Trees

... here we had snow yesterday and below-freezing temperatures today. These are the times when I start to think that maybe this year spring won't come... Tell me about it. Of late it's unseasonably cold here, too - parka weather, really, and in late March, of all things - although the snow and ice ...

Re: Quick poll on tenor recorders

I suspect this is one of those things where you'd have to try both to see which you prefer, or, barring that, pick one and you'll likely be happy enough with it. In the Yamaha vs. Aulos (and sometimes vs. Zen-On) debates I've seen, both have their fans who insist one or the other is better, and then...

Re: Trees

Great pictures, everyone. All I have around here are suburbs... more suburbs... nothing but suburbs... Mind you, I like also being near things I want to do and not having to drive two hours to the grocery store (or any further than I already have to to get to work), but sometimes people and concrete...

Re: Tenor recorders

These replies are helpful. My head says to go with the Aulos, my heart would like the little key to play with. A professional recorder player says if I go for a Yamaha or Aulos, I can't really go wrong. I'm going to the music shop to feel them. Thanks all! I think you can't, either. Between those t...

Re: Tenor recorders

I've seen some people say the difference isn't actually that great-- IIRC, it's because while the key may make those low notes easier to reach, the hole spacing is a bit wider, so it ends up being sort of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other? I've never tried a keyed tenor, though.

There are people on the internet who don't want to see cat pictures???

Re: Comments needed on my playing

I find it hard to imagine commentators being purposefully unkind to another's playing here, maybe I am being naive. What Loren says about people being over complimentary is sort of creepy , but I think anyone who posts their music has to be prepared for a mixed reaction also. Most of all, I think D...

Re: Alexa

Investors Needed: I want to start a company that makes and sells Irish-style brass knuckles to whistle players named "Alexa", who want to walk home from sessions and not worry about personal security, to not have anyone telling them what to play at sessions, and who don't want anyone tell...

Re: Brass body or Nickel ?

All this talk about toxicity has got me worried about the uranium whistle I ordered from the Ukraine. Sure, it's a bit heavy, but it's got a wonderful mellow sound and it's very easy to play in the dark. Don't worry about it. All whistle makers within 1000 miles of Chernobyl (and makers of anything...

Re: Brass body or Nickel ?

Some people also say a nickel body is slipperier to hold. Yeah, I agree: Nickel can definitely be a bit more squirrelly in the hand, kind of depends on atmospheric conditions and how dry your hands are. I really dislike the smell that brass leaves on my fingers and hands, so I generally prefer nick...

Re: Brass body or Nickel ?

I think it's going to depend on your ear (or perhaps expectations). I've heard some people say there's a difference, and others say there isn't, and still others say there is but it's so subtle it doesn't matter.

Some people also say a nickel body is slipperier to hold.
