Re Low whistles. i have an Overton, and had an interesting experience
with
it last year. The great Paddy Keenan was in Newfoundland recording,
and
was looking for an Overton to borrow. I lent him mine and we had a
chat
about low whistles. He was looking for an Overton as the one he uses
in
concert (low D) was sounding very breathy in the higher registers when
recorded. He took a look at mine and a couple of others (not many low
whistle players here), but found that in common with many of the later
Overtons, they do not play well in tune across both octaves. Chatting
to
Don Walsh, the producer a bit later, and he tells how Paddy solved
the
problem. Don was upstairs on the computer when he heard an odd noise
from
the basement. He went down to see Paddy performing surgery on his overton
with a hacksaw. apparently cutting off a small sliver from the mouthpiece
solved the breathy sound- I find my Overton does get clogged up very
easily due to the narrow fipple/mouthpiece. Anyway, the results of
the
surgery can be heard on paddy's latest recording, a gorgeous
slow air.
Thanks again for the web site.
